Shailene Woodley is going to play Jane in Big Little Lies. She’ll join Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in the HBO TV adaptation of the Liane Moriarty bestseller. Nicole Kidman herself confirmed the casting and announced they’re going to start shooting in January. Now why didn’t I think of that?! When I shared my take on the book (BIG LOVE) I suggested Emma Stone or Kristen Stewart for the 24 year old single mother who looks so young the other mums at school mistake her for a nanny. It’s not that they’re both not terrific young actresses; I’m just stunned that I didn’t think of Shailene Woodley myself. I’ve been a fan since I saw her in The Descendants, long before she was Hazel Grace in The Fault in Our Stars or Tris in the Divergent film franchise.
If you haven’t read Big Little Lies—or any book by Liane Moriarty—I highly recommend it/them. Her novels are a bold mix of light and dark, summing up contemporary culture, while wrapping you up in the worlds of her awesome Australian cast of characters, mainly wonderfully written women.
That’s the big disappointment. With Reese Witherspoon and now another American in Shailene Woodley being on board, any hopes I had for the film being set in Sydney have flown right out the window. I was really looking forward to seeing this view!
