In honor of our big day, today's Sunday Slacker video is a short book trailer for the extraordinary novel, followed up with a brief snippet of a chat the folks at Collider had with producer David Heyman. He's the man responsible for bringing The Light Between Oceans to the screen later this year with Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander playing the lighthouse keeper and his wife. Blue Valentine director Derek Gianfrance helmed the movie, with Adam Argapaw doing the shooting. The cinematographer just wrapped MacBeth—also with Fassbender—and as Heyman notes in the video, he shot True Detective too. The credit that makes me happiest is that he was behind the camera for Top of the Lake, the Netflix mystery series starring Elizabeth Moss. He did a fabulous job capturing the mystery and striking beauty of New Zealand; I'm excited to see long takes featuring striking shots of the rugged Australian coast.
You can find out more about the film, and check out some images of Michael Fassbender as Tom and Alicia Vikander as Isabel plus Rachel Weisz as Hannah, from the Australian film locations here. Filming is complete and in the hands of the editors and the film's composer now. As luck would have it, this is another Alexandre Desplat project, so expect music as beautiful, emotional and nuanced as the novel. The UK release date has officially been set for January 6th but we'll be getting it here in the states sometime this fall. Definitely in time for an Oscar run.
