Congrats to Alice Munro; 13th woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

HUGE Congrats to Alice Munro! Isn't she lovely? The 82 year old and fellow Ontario, Canada resident (ok I'm a former fellow Ontario resident, but still, I'm proud) has just won the Nobel Prize for literature! According to the Washington Post, the Canadian writer is being hailed as the master of the contemporary short story and the first true blue Canadian to win the $1.2 million dollar prize - Saul Bellow won in 1976 but was a transplanted yank. Munro is only the 13th woman ever, to win the Nobel Prize for literature.

I like Margaret Atwood's take on Munro
“Among writers, her name is spoken in hushed tones,” fellow Canadian author Margaret Atwood once wrote. “She’s the kind of writer about whom it is often said — no matter how well known she becomes — that she ought to be better known.”
And now she is! Huzzah! Here at Chapter1-Take1 I'm hoping that being better known means more Munro movies. IF we're talking about adaptations I really believe Hollywood should focus a little more attention on the possibilities short stories provide; a shorter, more manageable piece provides ample opportunities for the screenwriter and director to riff, without having to lose huge, drastic chunks of the story.

Why not visit Munro's Facebook page and congratulate her?

Sarah Polley - another Canadian - who wrote and directed Away from Her in 2006 based her film on Munro's short story “The Bear Came Over The Mountain”  - I confess I like Polley's title better- about a woman's mental deterioration. Julie Christie starred and was nominated for an Oscar for her performance while Polley got a nom for the screenplay.

CONGRATULATIONS MS MUNRO ON YOUR NOBEL PRIZE WIN!
