GYPSY! It began with a book...

Barbara Streisand is back with a project that's been on and off for the past few years! She is set to produce and star as Mama Rose in the latest incarnation of the Gypsy Rose Lee story. The story of the world's most famous stripper is loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee and has been done before, both onscreen with Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood and in a Tony award winning musical onstage.
Apparently Barbara Streisand has been trying to get the movie made for over a decade! I just read at The Wrap that Joel Silver will produce along with Streisand AND that  Julian Fellowes - the amazing writer behind Downton Abbey, and Gosford Park is penning the screenplay. Fellowes plans on using the Tony award winning
musical from Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents as his source material.
I'm betting Barbara Streisand will do an incredible job in the role that's been played onstage by greats like Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters and Patti Lupone and onscreen by Rosalind Russell and Bette Midler. No word yet on who will play Gypsy... thoughts?
