Wow! It's early morning and I'm enjoying a cup of coffee in bed and cruising the net. Wham! Cinemablend hits me with the UK and Ireland trailer for Now Is Good, a film based on the YA novel Before I Die from Jenny Downham. So now I've got tears in my coffee. And I've got no more Splenda so I'll have to enjoy it as it is, thanks very much!
I suppose Before I Die would be just a tad too much of a downer for a movie title - notice how even the book jacket has the encouraging 'makes you glad to be alive' blurb on the front - and The Bucket List was already taken.
Now Is Good is fine at first blush except how good can today be when you know the I could get run over and die tomorrow so I better live for today philosophy isn't simply theoretical but harsh reality? The film, directed by Ol Parker, also stars Jeremy Irvine who was just seen in War Horse and who plays Pip in the upcoming Great Expectations. It's not clear when the film will be released here in the states or in the UK but I assume it will hit England and Ireland first. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that little Dakota's accent passes muster with the Brits! It sounds good to me but what do I know?
Anyway, I'll be ordering up Before I Die on my nook and no doubt muse about my own bucket list.
Up there in the top ten is to see the beautiful Blue Grotto on the isle of Capri in Italy.
Dakota Fanning, looking a bit like Carey Mulligan and 'adorb' ( as the kids seem to be saying these days) in a gamine do, plays Tessa, a 17-year-old girl with terminal leukemia. B&N says this about the guaranteed tear-jerker:
Tessa has just months to live. Fighting back against hospital visits, endless tests, and drugs with excruciating side effects, Tessa compiles a list. It’s her To Do Before I Die list. And number one is Sex. Released from the constraints of “normal” life, Tessa tastes new experiences to make her feel alive while her failing body struggles to keep up.
