The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo features Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander: Director of the original objects

Below is the long version trailer of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo I saw last night at the movies. It features Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander and if I didn't know better I would think she was European. How different she appears from the college girl rejecting Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network! She didn't have a huge part but it was pivotal and the scene in the restaurant where she bascially tells him to take a hike gives a little glimpse into her inner toughness. Certainly enough to sell David Fincher who directed The Social Network, as well as this American version of Girl with Dragon Tattoo, on her ability to play this role. From all accounts he didn't want a sanitized, Hollywood version of Salander either; Mara seems to have mastered not only the accent, she can kick ass with the best of them. Appropriate perhaps when you consider she is from a major football family.
The director of the original, Niels Arden Oplev is reportedly pretty upset about the casting,
In his version, the film's lead was played by Swedish actor Noomi Rapace, and Oplev complained in Word & Film that the "Sony PR machine" trying to push her out of the limelight.
"Noomi has captured this part and it should always be all her," he said. "That's her legacy in a way I can't see anyone competing with. I hope she gets nominated for an Oscar."
This is an amazing part, an incredibly complex character who also has the makings of an action hero. It;s commendable and understandable that Oplev would be fiercely loyal about his Salander. And arguably,  Rapace will be hard to beat but judging from this trailer, Rooney's casting as Lisbeth won't be anything to complain about.
