The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society starring Lily James

So, finally, after waiting since 2012—the adaptation of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society lands here in the US on Netflix.

The film opened last month in the UK and other countries. And we already have complaints.

The title is too long. It is. Especially on twitter #TheGuernseyLiteraryandPotatoPeelPieSociety
You’ve barely plugged in the title and you’re out of characters.

Remember when Kate Winslet was going to play the part of Juliette? Man, that was back in 2012 when we first started watching for this screen adaptation!

The trailer gives everything away. It does.
Juliette’s entire arc—simplified—is shown.

Lily James falls in love with Michiel Huisman instead of Matthew Goode? Or even Glen Powell? She does.

As a fan of Goode’s there’s not much I can say about that but be reasonable. As soon as we heard Goode was cast as Sidney Stark we knew he was headed to the homosexual friend zone.

My complaints. The small screen.

I HATE that here in the US we don’t get a theatrical release. While I love being able to see such a wide variety of films—and my fave British telly—on the small screen, I really was hoping for a lavish film experience with all the stunning visuals the Guernsey Island setting deserves. Except the film wasn’t shot in Guernsey, it was shot in Cornwall. Also gorgeous, but not Guernsey.

AND since we do have to satisfy ourselves with a small screen experience, I wish they’d done it as a series. There are so many warm and wonderful characters in the novel and it’s clear that the backstory, the soul of the book, has been hacked to smithereens. They are marketing this as a love story, which it is, but Elizabeth’s story and that of Kit, seem to play a definite second fiddle. At least in the trailer.

Okay, I’ll stop whining (whingeing as my Brit friends would say) Let’s watch the trailer. Thoughts? I’m all ears.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society stars Lily James, Michael Huisman, Glen Powell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Katherine Parkinson, Matthew Goode, Tom Courtenay, and Penelope Wilton. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society hits Netflix on August 10th.
