James Ivory on winning the Oscar for Call Me By Your Name #book2movies #Screenplay

Fourth Time’s the Charm

James Ivory, first nominated for directing A Room with A View back in 1987, finally won an Oscar this year. The win was not for directing—Ivory was also nominated in 1993 and 1994 for directing the exquisite Howard's End and The Remains of the Day —it was for writing the screenplay adaptation of Call Me By Your Name based on the book by Andre Aciman. At 87, he is the oldest Oscar winner ever.

Timothée Chalamet in Call Me By Your Name

In his acceptance speech Ivory told the Academy Award audience
‘‘A story familiar to most of us, whether we’re straight, or gay, or somewhere in between, we’ve all gone through first love, I hope. And come out the other side mostly intact.’’

James Ivory himself is gay, so I imagine writing the gorgeous Call Me By Your Name was a labor of love. The coming of age story stars Timothée Chalamet and hunky Armie Hammer, and as I’ve said somewhere before, gay or straight, man or woman, who wouldn't fall in love with his big, brash Americano?

Ivory told the Hollywood Reporter
“I always knew who I was and who I am and what I wanted. I knew that I had to keep those ideas to myself. They were not something you could talk about.”
For the writers among you, especially the aspiring screenwriters, I grabbed the Reddit link to the Oscar winning screenplay for Call Me By Your Name. Grab it while you can.
