Anton Yelchin & Zooey Deschanel star in metaphysical romance The Driftless Area [trailer]

I told you about The Driftless Area last April, and then, blip, it dropped off the radar. Not just mine. Everybody’s. After screening at Tribeca and a couple of other festivals, the movie went into hiding. But now it’s back in the conversation, with its first trailer and a release date of April 28th on DVD and VOD.

Glancing at a couple of reviews it seems “Driftless” is a very apropos title. For me, as much as I love Zooey Deschanel, I can’t look at her without seeing her as that quirky girl in (500) Days of Summer or swinging her legs from the restroom counter in Elf and singing with Will Ferrell. This is obviously much darker fare, and I wonder if that’s part of the issue? We’ll have to wait and see but in the meantime, check out the trailer below and see what you think.
In my original post the blurb was short and simple:
‘A bartender, Pierre, played by Anton Yelchin, comes back to his hometown after his parents die, and finds himself in a dangerous situation involving a mysterious woman (Stella, played by Zooey Deschanel) and a violent criminal.’
But quoting IndieWire:
“The neo-noir, metaphysical romance centers on a budding love affair that causes a ripple effect in a quiet town. After his parents’ death, an affable bartender, Pierre Hunter (Anton Yelchin), returns to his childhood home where he falls for the enigmatic Stella (Zooey Deschanel), a stunning woman with an elusive past. Pierre finds himself pulled into a cat-and-mouse game with an incompetent yet destructive criminal (John Hawkes). Braced with a duffel bag full of cash and unyielding optimism, an unveiling mystery sets Pierre down a path that will determine all of their fates.”
Here’s the trailer which debuted on Yahoo.
