Costume Design: Inherent Vice nominated for Oscar and Costume Designer Guild awards

Welcome to another Slacker Sunday. I found a very groovy bit of video courtesy of the ArcLight Theatres for the very groovy but overlooked jewel Inherent Vice. I don't know why y'all didn't like it —I thought it was far-out—but the movie didn't exactly blow up the box office stats.

The film isn't up for any of the acting awards but Paul Thomas Anderson was nominated in the Best Adapted Screenplay category — recognition from the Academy that distilling Thomas Pynchon's story is no easy feat, and frankly, PTA nailed it. The film's costume design which channels the early 70's is also nominated. Designer Mark Bridges, who won an Oscar for his work on The Artist, has a remarkable resume, including work on Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, and There Will Be Blood. This year his work on Inherent Vice is up against The Grand Budapest Hotel, Malificent, Mr. Turner and Into the Woods. The Costume Designer's Guild has also nominated Bridges for Excellence in a Period Film where his competition is once again The Grand Budapest Hotel, along with The Imitation Game, Selma and The Theory of Everything. I have a feeling the flashier Grand Budapest Hotel will take the prize at both since The Grand Budapest Hotel movie has received a lot more love all around. Hey seriously, it's an honor to be nominated, right? The CDG hand out their awards this coming Tuesday, February 17th—the due date for Academy members to have their votes in—while the Academy Awards show airs next Sunday, February 22nd.

Let's take a peek at what Mr. Bridges has to say about working on Inherent Vice.
