Benedict Cumberbatch just can't wait to be king.

When it comes to Shakespeare, BBC2 is bringing it. The British television broadcast company announced that Benedict Cumberbatch will, as Deadline put it, 'trade his kingdom for a horse as the titular king' in the BBC2's television production of Shakespeare's Richard lll

Sam Mendes will executive produce rather than direct; that job is being given to first time screen helmer Dominic Cooke, the widely respected former artistic director of the Royal Court Theatre.

Cumberbatch, a Royal Court alum, said, “I can’t wait to work with Dominic Cooke again to bring this complex, funny and dangerous character to life.”

Cumberbatch is also prepping to play another Shakespearian lead; he'll play Hamlet next summer in London's West End. And speaking of Shakespeare, Martin Freeman, Cumberbatch's Sherlock co-star, is set to play Richard III, onstage at London’s Trafalgar Studios from July 1 to September 27 this year.
